K9 Dash and SGT Clark, Amherst Police Department

K9 Dash, the first canine officer of the Amherst Police Department, recently passed away after nearly a decade of remarkable service. A German shepherd originally from the Netherlands, Dash began his career in 2014, working under the guidance of his handler, Sgt. T.J. Clark. Trained in Dutch commands, Dash's skills were instrumental in a variety of operations, from locating missing individuals to apprehending criminal suspects.

Dash’s role in establishing the K9 unit at Amherst was pivotal. Through grants and community support, the department was able to launch this program, and Dash became a vital part of the force. His work included assisting in high-stakes situations, such as tracking down armed robbery suspects and discovering hidden illegal drugs, all of which contributed to the safety and security of the community. Dash's exceptional efforts earned him several Letters of Merit, highlighting his impact on critical cases, including his life-saving role during an incident in South Amherst.

Beyond his professional duties, Dash played a key role in public engagement, participating in community demonstrations and showcasing the incredible capabilities of police K9s. His presence brought reassurance and safety to countless situations, solidifying his place as a true asset to the department.

Though we never had the privilege of knowing K9 Dash personally, his legacy speaks for itself. His dedication to protecting his community, his loyalty to his handler, and the many lives he touched through his service are an enduring testament to his heroism. Dash will be remembered not only by those who served alongside him but also by the entire Amherst community that benefited from his unwavering commitment. His legacy lives on in the hearts of all who honor the brave work of K9 heroes.
