K9 Odin

K9 Odin and Officer Averbeck, Alton Police Department

K9 Odin, a Belgian Malinois/German Shepherd mix, began his journey in January 2023 in Hungary before traveling to the United States. In early 2024, he was selected by the Alton Police Department in Illinois to begin his law enforcement training. After successfully completing rigorous training at the Illinois State Police K9 Academy, K9 Odin officially joined the Alton Police Department in May 2024.

During his short but impactful service, K9 Odin played a vital role in keeping the community safe. He assisted in locating illegal drugs, recovering stolen vehicles, and apprehending dangerous individuals. His courage and dedication were evident each day he served, making a lasting impression on those he worked alongside.

On August 22, 2024, K9 Odin was called to assist in locating an armed subject who posed a significant threat to the community. In a brave act that ultimately saved lives, Odin located the suspect but was tragically wounded in the line of duty. Despite the best efforts of the medical team, Odin later succumbed to his injuries.

K9 Odin’s heroic actions will forever be remembered by the Alton Police Department and the community he served. His selfless commitment to protecting others exemplifies the bravery of K9s everywhere.
